To celebrate slow food and the pleasure of cooking and eating together, Beth Tellman organized a weekday evening Eat-In in a commons room at Santa Clara University on April 30, 2009.

A group of about ten students prepared a simple, farm-fresh meal with ingredients from Catalan Farm in Hollister, CA. Many of the students had met the farmer, Maria Ines Catalan, on a university-run weeklong learning trip to California's Central Valley, where they had the opportunity to get to know a few of the farmers and farmworkers who labor to provide our food. Catalan Farm also provides produce for an on-campus CSA.

At the Eat-In, Allie Dunne shared stories from the students' trip, and Beth Tellman and Gordon Jenkins stood up to tell the crowd how they had come to be food activists and why they believe food has the potential to build a broad social movement to improve the lives of all Americans.

As everyone finished eating salad, pasta with cauliflower and snap peas, home-baked bread and "ants on a log," Beth and her friends Andrew Conner and JT Harechmark broke out their guitars and played a few songs for the crowd to end a very warm, pleasant and enthusiastically friendly meal.
